Ray has edited and published Astrological Monthly Review since 1980. He has also written for The Australian Weight Watchers magazine, The Australian Good Taste Magazine, The Sky Channel Racing Television, and "Your Day by the Stars' - the longest running daily radio astrology feature in the world - running daily non-stop since 1st October 1988.
First entered astrology in the late 1940's and wrote a column for 18 months. Quietly studied and practiced for the rest of his life until now. Has lectured hundreds of times to the general public and for several years had his own telephone astrology radio program on Sydney radio 2GB first with Malcolm Elliott and later with Ian McRae.
Enjoyed a wonderfully successful radio career spanning 25 years as announcer, salesman, copywriter, copy manager, sales manager and traffic manager. Was directly responsible for dozens of advertising campaigns every year. He worked with or personally knew Jack Davey, Bob Dyer, John Harper, Eric Baume, Dom Harnett, Mike Walsh, Phil Haldeman, Tony Withers, Bob Rogers, John Laws, Brian Wilshire, Jimmy Hannon, Micky De Stoop and dozens of well known radio and show business personalities over the years.
Other jobs included sales manager of a potato crisp company, running a mobile car wash business, shovelling coal, selling ice cream from a moving vehicle, representative of plastics manufacturer, toy wholesale business, cash register and adding machine selling, customs clerk, legal clerk, copywriter and soft drink salesman.
For kicks, he represented his rowing club in the state championships but didn't win any prizes, tennis - yes he did win a small cup for that, weightlifting, baseball and swimming as well as being a scout leader for several years.
What does he enjoy most? Just doing anything as long as it needs to be done.
Ray feels there is no need to fix anything until it is broken and this has made him slow to enter the electronic age in a number of respects. He didn't know what a computer looked like until 1984 and since then he has used and discarded three and still uses three that are in constant use.
Ray feels that in astrology you can learn plenty from just about everyone - especially people new to the whole business because they ask such wonderful questions and the best are the ones you cannot answer.
Many years ago he read about wartime leader, Winston Churchill, being able to 'cat-nap' and within ten minutes be totally refreshed and ready for a torrid war cabinet meeting. This made a big impression on Ray because for years he has been using his own version of the 'Winston Churchill' reviver method.
Ray can sleep anywhere anytime and can awaken within a minute or two of an appropriated time. Meditation helps keep him alert and helps keep his sense of proportion. He feels it is important always to realise what you can do nothing about at any particular time and to stop fretting about things you just cannot control.
When asked if he had any advice to offer newcomers to astrology he said
"Always remember your way is right for you and you alone. Don't listen to anyone who has the hide to tell you that they have all the answers. Particularly don't listen to people who run from one country to another running seminars and telling you how to make gold. If they were so good they would be doing something else. Massive amounts of money don't make you happy. We all know people who have lots more than we do and they are still desperately unhappy and what is more they generally don't look healthy - they look mean and all they want is power and more power and even that won't ever satisfy these pitiful people.
"So do it your way and be happy about it and if you make a squillion dollars in the process - that's fine!
"Keep your old friends. Don't stab anyone in the back. Do a good turn whenever you can and don't wait to be asked before you do it.
Above all else, try to be modest - that's hard when you have enjoyed a little success but as long as you can laugh about your mistakes I guess you'll be on the right path most of the time."
